CAF considering reverting to previous calendar for AFCON

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is considering reverting to the traditional two-year cycle for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), president Patrice Motsepe has confirmed.
Motsepe made the revelation during a press conference in Cape Verde on Friday, the final day of CAF’s Strategy Conference.
“We are looking into bringing AFCON back to every two years. That’s under review,” Motsepe said.
CAF announced in December 2025 that AFCON would move from its traditional biennial schedule to a four-year cycle after the 2028 edition.
Under the revised calendar, the 2027 tournament in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will proceed as planned, followed by the 2028 edition before the new cycle takes effect.
However, Motsepe’s latest comments suggest the governing body could reconsider the decision, although no formal reversal has been announced.
A return to the two-year cycle would mark a significant change to CAF’s competition calendar, with the organisation also planning to introduce an annual African Nations League from 2029.
